Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
