Resurgent Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in 882 Days

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hard courts

A revitalized Medvedev secured his first championship for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has had a difficult year, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally separating with former coach Cervara.

Presently working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has steadily improved in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought competitive triumph over opponent Moutet.

It is his maiden title after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface from March of the previous year.

The win also indicates Medvedev has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one different tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a competition with my two daughters at once, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in tribute of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six finals, featuring in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's retrieving strategy and recurring reactions on court had caused commentators to wonder if his capacity to play at the top level was over.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, reinforced by an improved serving game.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the opening set against the challenging Frenchman, securing four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players exchanged break points in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour championship, seized the initiative to create a third set.

The opponent rescued four early break points in a tight deciding set before the Russian broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, the winner clinched the title with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to handle a volley after over two and a half hours.
